How can I get my 4 month old kitten to stay off the kitchen counter? - 4 month old with craking knees

We have a cat who is 4 months now big enough to jump onto the kitchen worktop. All ideas on how to keep it? There is an indoor cat only, and our kitchen and living room design is open, if closed doors is not an option!
Others have advised him not to leave the counter with a slap on the back and a slap. We have also tried to turn the water on my face, but less than a minute later and immediately jump again!
